St James Senior Boys' School 1st XV vs  Pre Season Training Games
On: Wednesday, 11 Sep 2019
Venue: Away

The 1st XV Rugby team travelled to LVS Ascot on Wednesday afternoon to get their season underway with a ‘Quadrangular’ training-game tournament. The first game was against old friends Ewell Castle school and it really was a one sided affair. The power of the Saints pack was too much for Ewell allowing us to dominate possession and territory, moving around the defence with ease to create scoring opportunities. Wiseman (2) and Gero, both on debut, along with Gilchrist, took advantage, all scoring well worked tries. Several more chances went begging due to rustiness but with two conversions by Fusil, the final score in the 20 minute game was an impressive 24-0. The second match against LVS was an attritional affair against a big, abrasive side. Again many opportunities were created by good build up play but this time we were unable to capitalise due to poor decision making or over complicating at the vital moment. However, there were some excellent moments in this game that should be taken into the season such as the 30m rolling mall and the break out from behind our own line. Final score 0-0. The final game was against Burnham Grammar who traditionally field big teams. Unfortunately, the size of the opposition got into the minds of the Saints players who started on the back foot and found themselves two tries down in 5 minutes without really touching the ball. After regrouping, the middle 10 minutes were much better and the final 5 saw the intensity that the team should have started with, giving them the initiative. A 90m solo effort by Fusil inspired the team who finished the stronger and an excellent break by Panton almost snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

This was a very positive afternoon of Rugby considering that there were 12 players on debut, but this must be seen as the one that got away.
